Intervista a Lisa Ballantyne

Cari amici, oggi abbiamo il piacere e l'onore di presentarvi l'intervista a un'autrice che abbiamo particolarmente amato. Si tratta di Lisa Ballantyne, autrice de "Il colpevole" (la nostra recensione qui).

  Lisa Ballantyne è nata ad Armadale, in Scozia. Ha studiato letteratura inglese alla University of St Andrews. Parla il mandarino, avendo vissuto fino a vent'anni in Cina. Vive ora nel Regno Unito e insegna alla University of Glasgow. Il colpevole è il suo primo romanzo. 

Benvenuta su “Il Flauto di Pan” Lisa! Raccontaci qualcosa di te. Quando e perché hai cominciato a scrivere?
Grazie per il benvenuto. Sono molto lieta del vostro interesse. Ho sempre scritto, ma quando ero più giovane scrivevo principalmente poesie. Ho trascorso la gran parte dei miei vent'anni in Cina ed è stato lì che ho cominciato a scrivere romanzi. Sono stata spinta a scriverli perchè i personaggi e le loro vite avevano cominciato ad "abitarmi". Quando ho iniziato a scrivere Il colpevole, i personaggi di Daniel e della sua madre affidataria Minnie mi erano molto chiari. Potevo vederli e annusarli ed ero spinta a scrivere perchè volevo raccontare la storia di Daniel.


Il colpevole, com'è nata l'idea?
L'ho scritto perchè volevo raccontare la storia dell'infanzia tormentata di Daniel. Sapevo che adesso era un adulto a raccontarci la storia e potevo vedere che, a dispetto del suo passato difficile, era diventatao un adulto di successo. Ha preso così forma l'idea del legale, Daniel, che doveva difendere un bambino processato per omicidioe ho pensato che la storia di questo bambino avrebbe potuto mettere in risalto quella di Daniel.

Cosa puoi dirci a proposito del rapporto tra Sebastian e Daniel?  
Quando Daniel incontra Sebastian inizia a pensare al suo passato, al suo rapporto con la sua madre naturale e con quella affidataria. E' costretto a confrontarsicon la sua violenza da bambino. Il presente narrativo del libro segue il processo di Sebastian , Daniel lentamente gli si avvicina e si rivede in lui. Alla fine, il fatto che Sebastian sia colpevole o meno, non è importante perchè nel libro tutti sono colpevoli - non solo i personaggi principali, ma la società e il sistema giudiziario. Il libro ci spinge a considerare le responsabilità della società nei confronti di chi commette un crimine.

Ti riconosci in qualcuno dei personaggi?
I personaggi mi vengono in mente già formati e non mi riconosco in alcuno di loro. La mia vita è molto diversa dal mondo del libro: non sono un avvocato e non ho mai vissuto in alcuna delle località in cui è ambientato il romanzo. Mi sono sempre sentita spinta a scrivere storie perchè i personaggi cominciavano a esistere e in questo libro sono arrivata ad amarli molto. 

Quali sfide hai dovuto affrontare per vedere pubblicato il tuo libro?

Ci sono numerose sfide da affrontare quando si cerca di pubblicare. Io non ho scritto questa storia al solo scopo di pubblicarla. L’ho scritta perché dovevo e l’avrei fatto anche se non fosse stata pubblicata. Comunque, pubblicare è meraviglioso. Sono stata felicissima quando il libro è stato pubblicato nel Regno Unito e poi quando Giano ha deciso di pubblicarlo in Italia. Sono molto curiosa di scoprire in che modo i lettori italiani lo accoglieranno.

Dicci in una sola frase, perchè leggere il tuo libro.
Il colpevole è un libro che affronta temi universali,  educazione e libero arbitrio ed è un libro profondamente coinvolgente dal punto di vista emotivo. 

Hai altri libri in cantiere? Progetti per il futuro?
Attualmente, sto lavorando al mio secondo romanzo, che spero, sarà presto pronto. Anche il nuovo libro racconterà una storia familiare e di introspezione psicologica.

Welcome to "Il flauto di Pan" Lisa!Please tell us something about yourself. When and why did yuou start writing?
Thank you so much for your welcome. I am so delighted in your interest. I have always written, but when I was younger I mainly wrote poetry. I spent most of my twenties in China and it was there that I started to write long fiction. I was drawn to writing novels because characters and their lives began to 'inhabit' me. When I began writing Il Colpevole, the characters of Daniel and his foster mother Minnie were very clear to me. I could see them and I could smell them and I was driven to write because I wanted to tell Daniel's story. 

Il colpevole, how did you get the idea?
I wrote the story because I was drawn to telling the story of Daniel's troubled childhood. I knew that he was now an adult telling us the story and I could see that, despite his difficult past, he was now a successful adult. I became drawn to the idea of the solicitor, Daniel, having to defend a young child on trial for murder as I thought that this child's story could throw Daniel's story into relief.


What about the relationship between Sebastian and Daniel?

When Daniel meets Sebastian he begins to think about his own past and his relationship with his mother and foster mother. He is forced to confront his own violence as a child. The present day narrative in the book follows Sebastian's trial and Daniel slowly begins to become close to Sebastian and see himself in the young boy. Ultimately, the question of Sebastian's guilt or innocence is unimportant as everyone in the book is guilty – not just the main characters, but society and the criminal justice system. The book then causes us to consider society's responsibility for people who commit crime. 

Can you see yourself in any of your characters? 
The characters came to me fully formed and I do not see myself in any of them. My own life is very different to the world of the book: I am not a lawyer, and I have not lived in any of the locations where the book is set. I am always drawn to a story because characters come to be and I grew to love the characters in this book very much.  

What challenges did you face in getting your first
book published?

There are a number of challenges in trying to get published. I did not write this story only to be published. I was writing it because I had to and if it had not been published, I would still be writing still. However, getting published was a wonderful thing. I was so happy when the book was published in the UK but then delighted that Giano agreed to publish it in Italy. I am very interested to hear the response of Italian readers to the book. 

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should  read your book.

Il Colpevole is a book about the universal themes of nature, nurture and free will and is a book that is  deeply psychological yet moving. 

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

I am currently working on my second novel, which I hope will be ready soon. The new book is also a family story which is deeply psychological.
